Shaded Baby Blanket Pattern (1950’s)

 

Shaded Baby Blanket

Size : 34 inches square

MATERIALS REQUIRED

4 ounces light weight Baby Wool 3 ply (pink or blue)

3 ounces white

1 pair No. 8 needles

1 pair No. 13 wooden needles

1 E crochet hook

GAUGE

stitches equal 1 inch

This blanket is knitted with 2 strands of yarn throughout.

Using two strands of pink (or blue) yarn and one of the No. 13 wooden needles, cast on 110 stitches.

Knit back, using one of the No. 8 needles. Always slip the first stitch on every row.

Knit one row with a No. 13 needle and one row with a No. 8 needle alternately (a row is once across the needle), until there are 16 ridges (32 rows). Break one strand of the pink yarn and attach a strand of white yarn. Always use the large needle when changing. Knit 16 ridges, using one strand of pink and one strand of white yarn and alternating the needles as before. Break the second strand of pink yarn, attach a second strand of white yarn and knit 16 ridges of white. Knit 16 ridges using one strand of each color, then knit 16 ridges of pink. Bind off loosely using the large needle.

Baby Blanket Border

Using two strands of white yarn and No. E hook, work 54 loops along each side of blanket as follows: Attach yarn and *chain 4, skip 1 stitch, make 1 single crochet in next stitch and repeat from * around all edges. On the side edges of blanket it will be possible to skip a whole ridge only about every other stitch.

Row 2: With one strand of white and one strand of pink yarn, *chain 6, make 1 single crochet in single crochet of previous row, and repeat from * around all edges.

Row 3: With two strands of pink yarn, *chain 8, make 1 single crochet in single crochet of previous row. Finish off the threads.

Pin the blanket out perfectly square and press lightly using a damp cloth and a warm iron.
